Apraxia-friendly AAC: why touchscreens fail, and what helps
Plenty of families try a communication app, watch it not work, and conclude that AAC "isn't for" their child or sibling. Very often the app was never the problem — the touchscreen was. This page explains why, and what to look for in an AAC app when apraxia or other motor difficulty is part of the picture.
What apraxia does to tapping
Apraxia affects motor planning — the path between deciding to do a movement and the body carrying it out. On a touchscreen that shows up in familiar ways: taps that land next to the intended key, a finger that rests a moment too long and fires a key twice, a drag that registers as a tap, or a touch that lands on the way to somewhere else. None of that says anything about what the person knows or wants to say. It is a hands problem, not a knowing problem.
Standard AAC apps are usually dense grids of small picture buttons. Every extra row makes each target smaller, and every mis-tap speaks the wrong word out loud — so the app itself keeps interrupting with errors the person never meant. For someone who already knows their letters, there's a second cost: a symbol grid caps them at the words someone else chose to put on the board.
What an apraxia-friendly AAC app changes
Four things matter most, and they're worth checking in any app you try:
Big, well-spaced targets. Fewer, larger keys mean a tap can be imprecise and still land. A letterboard-style layout — 26 letters plus a few controls — keeps every target large on a tablet screen.
A tap guard. Accidental repeat taps (the double-fire when a finger lingers) should be absorbed by the app, not spoken aloud. TBoard's tap guard ignores repeat taps inside a window you control.
Adjustable tap timing. Whether a touch counts on press-down or on release, and how long a touch must be held to count, should be tunable to how the person's hands actually work — rather than how a tablet expects hands to work.
Forgiving correction. A wrong letter should be a one-tap fix, silently — not a spoken error, and not a reason to start the sentence over.
