An AAC app for Android tablets: a letterboard that speaks

Most of the well-known AAC apps are iPad-only. If your family, school or clinic runs on Android tablets, the list gets short fast. TBoard is a typing-first AAC app that runs on Android tablets and iPad with the same letterboard layouts, the same touch settings and the same lessons on both.

What it is

A letterboard that speaks. The person spells letter by letter on a large, stencil-style layout, and the app says the message out loud. It was built for the developer's nonspeaking brother, whose barrier was never language — it was the touchscreen itself.

Built for hands that find touchscreens difficult

Letters register the moment the finger lands (or on lift — your choice). A tap guard filters accidental repeat taps. Targets are large and well spaced. Every letter can be spoken as it is typed, so the person gets audio feedback without looking up. External keyboards are supported.

Independent typing

There is no facilitation in the app. The speller taps every letter themselves, with no physical support and no one else's hand in the message.

More than the letterboard

Build custom boards from letters, words, phrases, symbols and your own photos. Three fresh spelling lessons arrive daily across three levels, and a lesson builder turns a photo of a worksheet into a graded lesson on the board. The letterboard, speech and custom boards are free; lessons are a subscription.
