TBoard School Privacy Policy

TBoard School is the school edition of TBoard, an AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) app with a letterboard, text-to-speech, lessons, worksheets and a gradebook. On iPad it is bought once per device through Apple School Manager; on Android tablets a school buys device licences from Muted Labs. It has no accounts and no sign-in. This policy explains what stays on the device, the little that uses the internet, and what we never receive.

What stays on the device

Everything a learner or teacher creates in TBoard School is stored on the device and nowhere else: learner profiles and their names, boards and board photos, saved phrases, custom lessons and worksheets, answers, teacher marks and notes, lesson and practice history, and settings. We do not receive any of it, and there is no cloud backup or sync. If you export a TBoard file, spreadsheet or printable report, it goes only where you choose to send it.

Photos and documents you choose for a lesson or a board are read on the device. Lesson text is recognized on the device (Apple Vision on iPad, Google ML Kit on Android), and the photos and documents are not uploaded. Personal Voice, if you choose to use one, is created and kept by the operating system on the device.

What uses the internet

• Daily lessons and premium voices: TBoard School downloads the daily lesson feed, its pictures and audio, and the premium voice files from Google Firebase Cloud Storage. These are the same public files for everyone. The request identifies no one, but like any internet request it reaches Google's servers from the device's network address.
• Licence activation (Android only): the first time an Android device opens TBoard School, it sends the school's licence key and the device's app-specific Android ID so one seat on the licence can be activated. We keep the licence's seat count and a one-way hash of the device ID, never the ID itself, so the same tablet can be reinstalled without using another seat. Nothing about a learner is sent, and the app does not contact us for this again.
• App integrity and service identifiers: Firebase App Check uses Apple's App Attest and DeviceCheck on iPad, and Google Play Integrity on Android, to confirm that downloads come from a genuine copy of the app. Firebase components also use a pseudonymous app-installation identifier to operate. These are not linked to a learner, are not used for advertising, and do not track anyone across other apps or websites.

What we do not collect

• No accounts, names, email addresses or passwords.
• No student work, answers, grades, messages or typed text.
• No usage analytics or crash reports. The analytics and crash-reporting services included in the app are switched off in TBoard School and cannot be switched on.
• No in-app purchases. On iPad the school buys TBoard School through Apple School Manager, and Apple handles that purchase. On Android the school buys licences from Muted Labs by invoice, and we keep that order and the licence record.
• No advertising and no tracking. We do not sell data.

Schools and students

TBoard School is operated by the school on devices it manages. Because the app stores no student information on our servers, there is no student record for us to access, share or delete. A school can remove a learner's work by deleting that learner's profile in the app, or all of it by removing the app from the device.

Deleting TBoard School data

TBoard School data lives on the device. To remove a learner's work, delete that learner's profile in the app; to remove everything, remove the app from the device. On Android, the only thing we keep about a device is its licence seat record: a one-way hash of the device ID and the date it was activated. To have those records deleted, email contact@mutedlabs.com from the school with the licence key and ask for its device records to be removed. We delete them within 30 days and the seats become free to use again. We keep the licence itself (the school's name, number of devices and invoice) while the licence is active and for as long as our accounting records require.

Third-party services

Google Firebase hosts the lesson and voice files and provides App Check; see Firebase's privacy and security information. Apple provides App Attest, DeviceCheck, Apple Vision and Personal Voice on iPad, and Google provides Play Integrity and ML Kit on Android; see Apple's privacy policy.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. If we make significant changes, we will update the date above and describe them in the app's release notes.
